This morning (i.e. right now), chaos reigns in Mong Kok. Following last night's incident outside Admiralty, the ranks of the pro-democracy protesters increase as more join the fight for universal suffrage. Fighting broke out this evening when a pro-democracy protester attempted to remove a police barricade, with police retaliating against his incursion. As the chaos grew and outnumbered by the protesters, police in riot uniform began using batons and pepper spray against charging crowds attempting to remove police barricades. In the brawl, three police officers were injured - one with a head injury, another with an injured hand and the last with a dislocated shoulder. Arrests of several individuals were made, including award winning Getty photographer Paula Bronstein, for allegedly ignoring police instructions.

Pro-democracy protesters have also found new ways of causing additional disruption - at junctions when traffic lights turn green, they throw coins out onto the road and rush to collect them, lingering until the traffic lights turn red again. Obviously, this is to disrupt traffic even further.

In fact, it is the disruption that is causing particular dissent amongst the anti-Occupy Central activists. The blockades in places such as Mong Kok, normally an extremely vibrant business location, have choked businesses and forced them to close temporarily. One particularly emotional scene was of a man who owned a businesses in the area - due to the protests, he claimed that income had been cut by more than 80%, which was insufficient to pay for the high rent. He went so far as to beg on his hands and knees, asking them to leave. How high a rent do you ask? Around HK$1 million a month, or in USD, nearly $129,000. Rent is ludicrously expensive in Hong Kong and many fledgling businesses fail because of it.

Sounds like the protesters are well on the way to losing public sympathy. Guess the government's already won...they just have to wait it out now. Too bad, it's a good cause taken out by a lack of leadership and control.

It's a damn shame, but seems to be a common thing with protestors and these sorts of movements. They don't seem to get that when you act like assholes and hurt the day to day lives of the general populace, then the populace turns against you.
